What kids hate about school

I've struggled in the past to figure out a way to start the conversation about classroom culture with kids. Here's what I hit on this year:

Here's what I learned:

  1. Kids hate being bored, love being interested.
  2. Kids hate doing homework.

Next step: Post these notes in a very public place.

Update: Ken Templeton has provided us with worldes, and there was much rejoicing.

  1. I tried this activity with my kids too and also put it in a Wordle. Here are my results from last year: http://mathymcmatherson.wordpress.com/2011/09/04/successful-students-effective-teachers/

I also gave them the same questions at the end of the year. I was curious if their answers would change any. I noticed two patterns: responses for effective teachers were more positive/active rather than negative/passive (ie: "Helps out students" instead of "Doesn't work with every student"). The second pattern was with successful students - a lot of more students listed attendance/coming to class as a quality that they didn't before.

    So... more food for thought.
